Why You May be Failing as a Leader in Network Marketing

You have likely learned by now that searching for information through your favorite search engine will likely result in a multitude of different opinions of characteristics needed for leading a successful team in network marketing. So in this article we'll discuss why you may be failing as a leader in network marketing. Sometimes we simply don't know how to grow our business, generate leads, recruiting, and then how to lead our team properly so they will duplicate our efforts. It's probably safe to say you have found varying degrees of opinions such as leadership, communication skills, self development, and marketing skills all being the top of the chain skill sets to develop. From observation and my own experience that I have gained as an entrepreneur there are areas we as leaders can easily overlook in our day to day activities with our teams. In this article I will provide some information and suggestions that you may find useful to add to your tool kit and coach for duplication with your team through a Servant Leadership approach. First let me tell you a quick story.

In my early days of growing myself as a leader, I worked closely with a leadership team at a previous company I worked with. I found that typically when specific instruction was provided for team members to perform actions to completion, a common theme was that team members would often struggle to execute the instructions effectively. I just couldn't figure out why my instructions weren't being followed the way I wanted them. It all boiled down to needing to find a way to lead in a way that provided a functioning application of specific instructions to not only be understood, but also duplicated from my leadership team to their individual teams. Frustration set in and I started wondering if I was even a right fit for leading to begin with! My instructions were clear, concise, and people responded with positive understanding, but the instructions just weren't being carried out. I wanted to pull my hair out. Then one day I was speaking with a mentor of mine and sharing my frustrations when I was introduced to the idea of Servant Leadership. It was then that the ‘aha moment' struck me and it was then that I realized I was already a Servant Leader, but didn't have all the pieces put together. Tweaking my own leadership behavior was needed and the results would be amazing.

Being an effective leader is absolutely within your grasp as it was in mine. It didn't matter if I was coachinghow to generate leads face to face or recruiting through a phone call, as all remained effective and the method of delivery wasn't the issue. Nothing changed in regard to continuing to be consistent with the instructions and expectations. What did I change however was simply providing demonstration of the instructions and skip level coaching sessions with my team's team.

It really was that easy. Once I gave instructions to a leader on my team, then dedicated myself to be a Servant Leader, I included demonstration of the behaviors I was trying to drive. What did this mean? Well, simply put, I showed them in real time by following my instructions with a demonstration during a real interaction. This allowed my team members to see the instructions being carried out in a live call or face to face interaction with a customer. Once completed, I asked for feedback by asking specific questions such as, ‘what did you like best?' and ‘what do you think you might change with that interaction?' In soliciting this feedback from my own leadership team I was also able to grow and practice these methods as well. A perfect example that coaching is a 360 degree process. The respect earned by not only my leadership team, but also our employees was worth its weight in gold and the results were very powerful.
This same Servant Leadership style tied perfectly into my own home business with growing my networkmarketing team. A promise I made to myself was to make myself available to demonstrate and actually teach my team. I made live calls to their prospects to show how the conversation should flow. I demonstrated to my team how to get to know their prospects to determine our solutions were right for them. I showed them how to build relationships with their customers. I showed them how they can coach their own teams to demonstrate the same way. Once I found that just sending an email out or giving instructions on a phone call wasn't enough, and took time to roll up my sleeves and demonstrate for them, the light bulbs came on! 

Some words of wisdom that I hope you can take away and put into practice for your team. Whatever your coaching efforts ranging from generating leads, recruiting or teaching how to duplicate your efforts in network marketing, take time to get in the pits with your team and demonstrate by talking to their first few prospects. Run a meeting for them, host a call, take time to show them how involved you are and the level of dedication you have for helping them succeed. Solicit feedback from your team members and allow them to learn through your demonstration. Always approach each demonstration by setting a clear understanding that it's ok to fail, it's ok to sound ‘weird', all this is normal. Through practice and stepping outside of our own comfort zone as leaders we all grow and adapt new methods coached to us by adding our own individual personalities. After all, this is a people business and it's all about growing and maintaining relationships right?

Give it a try, just let your new team member to include you on their first call and offer to do the work as a demonstration. You will notice a huge difference when you're demonstrating the level of commitment you have for their success and your investment in grooming them to be the best leader they can be. The rewards will be incredible will be duplicated each and every time. But it doesn't end there!

To continue your Servant Leadership approach, schedule bi-weekly checkups with leaders two, three, or even four levels down. Some term this ‘skip level' coaching and they provide exactly the same rewards and allow you to continue growing your team with consistency. When the leader that is ‘way up there' takes time out of their busy schedule to reach down and lend a helping hand a few levels down, the message is very powerful and definitely allows for the strong team commitment mindset to really sink in. It will do wonders for your own mindset and self motivation in knowing that you're making a difference.

Starting A Home Business: The Transition From Employee to Business Owner

In my 8 years in Network Marketing I have come across 100′s of people who fail purely because they do not successfully transition from employee to business owner when starting a home business - they are running their new business with an employee mindset. They believe they are just working from home now as opposed to working in an office somewhere - big mistake. You are working for yourself, you no longer work for someone else, nobody is going to pay you at the end of the month, You are taking on the role of creating a secure future for you and your family. You have to accept that responsibility - you can accept all the accolades when your business is successful and you are living your dream lifestyle but ONLY you are to blame when things go wrong and your family and friends are pointing the finger at you and saying "I told you so!!" I would urge you to read and study Robert Kiyosaki's book, 'Rich Dad, Poor Dad 2 - The Cashflow Quadrant' if you've not already done so.

Here are a couple of areas that you need to get right when Starting A Home Business:

1. Your Attitude - Attitude is Everything!! I always tell people not to compare themselves to their (more successful) peers but they still do. "They were just lucky," they say, "They were in the right place at the right time." "They know more people than I do." "Everyone I speak to has no money to invest." STOP STOP STOP!! Your peers are working with the same company as you, they are selling the same products as you, they have access to the same tools as you, they operate in the same market as you, their environment is the same as yours, "so why are they successful and I'm not?" What, or who, is the real problem here? Go and take a look in the mirror. However tough it may be to accept, you are looking at the problem - it's you.

The only variable in the whole equation is you. Circumstances are not going to change, the market is not going to change, the company and its products are not going to change, your environment is not going to change BUT YOU CAN! You have to take 100% responsibility for your life and where you are now, you have the power to change whatever you need to change but only you can make that change - it depends how much you want to change. Jim Rohn said "For things to change, you have to change, for things to get better, you have to get better, because if you don't change how you are, you will always have what you've got."

Jim Rohn also said, and here is the most important advice you will ever receive, "You need to work harder on yourself than you do on your business." There's no better place to start working on yourself than with material from the late, great Jim Rohn. I would also recommend 'Attitude is Everything', a book by Jeff Keller which is simple but powerful, the best book I have ever read on Attitude.

2. Your Work Ethic - Be Prepared to work hard. Sounds pretty obvious doesn't it but too many people think that working at home is easy and that running your own business, immediately means you can work 3-4 hours a day and earn 10 times what you were earning in your 9-5 job. WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!

To create some early momentum in your business and to lay a solid foundation, you will need to work as many hours as you can - more than you were used to working in your job. The rewards of building asuccessful home business come further down the line, you have to be prepared to make some huge sacrifices early on if you are going to get to the point where you work 3-4 hours a day and have the sort of lifestyle that most people only ever dream about. The sacrifices now are well worth the future rewards.

It's also important to give your business some 'Job Status'. Here's an example of what I mean. In your job, if your boss told you that you needed to be in early for an 8am meeting - you would be there whatever. Don't let yourself off the hook just because you work from home - if you plan to start work at 8am, then that's when you start - not 9.30 because you were a bit tired and fancied a lie-in!! Again you need to take responsibility.

Getting these sorts of things right will help you make the transition from employee to business owner that much smoother.

Getting Results - The Secret Formula

Let me start with a question here - what do people want when they start a home business? There are many predictable, but worthy answers - financial independence, time freedom, no commuting, no boss, quality of life, better work/life balance, etc. etc. All these answers can be classified under one heading - Results - the desired outcome from peoples' commitment to their new business. But what is actually required in order to get those desired results, is there a secret formula?? Well I guess there must be. Most people fail in business so they either miss it's importance or choose to ignore it.

Getting Results - The Secret Formula

For those who have the desire and want to know the secret, here it is:

RESULTS = ACTION + DISCIPLINE + CONSISTENCY + ATTITUDE

Hardly a secret is it, but let's take a brief look at each element and why each is a crucial step on the ladder to success.

Firstly, ACTION: This is 'The Plan', the lead generation activities you are going to carry out from which the results will come. My advice here is to follow what is proven, tried & tested. Do not re-invent the wheel. By all means try new things further down the line but not now - simply carbon copy the professionals and duplicate exactly what is making them successful. WARNING, WARNING!! Taking action is not sharpening your pencil, tidying your desk or creating a nice efficient filing system - none of these will move your business forward. My advice on this is firstly, do not spend time getting ready to get ready, get into action NOW! Secondly focus only on 'revenue-producing' activities, be busy doing the right things. Finally always remember, MASSIVE ACTION = MASSIVE RESULTS.

Secondly, DISCIPLINE: This can be split into personal discipline and business discipline. Working at homeis a huge challenge believe me, not the 'easy ride' that many think it will be - it doesn't mean you can get up late, watch a bit of daytime TV and have friends round for coffee. Your home is now your office - treat is as such. Create a DMO (Daily Method of Operation) and stick to it, remember in the words of the great Jim Rohn, "Success is few simple disciplines practised every day whilst failure is a few errors in judgement repeated every day." From a business point of view give your business some job status - start work when you say you are going to start, work the hours you say you are going to work and focus only on the things that will grow your business. At the end of each week ask yourself, "Can I put my hand on my heart and say that I have done everything within my power this week to move my business forward?"Thirdly, CONSISTENCY: It is crazy to have a great plan but then to only have the discipline to put it into action for a day, a week or a month. You can only create momentum in your business through consistent action day after day after day and you do this until, because it is very easy to lose momentum and it will take you 3 times longer to re-build it!! Again work from your DMO, set alarms to signal the start & end of an activity and stick to it. New habits take time to become the norm - the sooner you start the sooner you will be doing things without thinking.

Finally, ATTITUDE: This is the glue that sticks everything together. Two people may have the same plan, have the same daily disciplines and with the same level of consistency but end up with totally different results because they approached everything with a different attitude. You have to be positive in everything you do, have the total belief that success is coming your way because you deserve it and focus on the things you want NOT on the things you don't want. I honestly believe that 'Attitude is Everything' - it will put you on the road to success or the road to failure.

If you are determined to succeed, you will, but it may take time (and numerous failures) to get there. Don't be too hard on yourself when you do let things slip a little but at the same time don't let yourself off the hook too easily. You've heard the question "How do you eat an elephant?" (Answer) One bite at a time. Your success will surely come if you focus each and every day on being that little bit better than you wereyesterday.

Traffic + Leads= Conversions

The 2 keys of any business online or even offline for that matter are: You need something to sell and you Need some one to buy what you are selling. For instance you wouldn't want to sell a cookbook to a person who is interested in learning to play the piano
You need to find out who your targeted buyer is. This is key, you must know your customer better than the competition does. You must know their wants, needs, and how to help them overcome the problems they are searching to find answers for. 

This is called your customer Avatar. Knowing your customer, is knowing what they want to get from you and then start building a trust factor. These are key elements to establishing a relationship with your buyers.

Most of the time, people only buy from someone they can trust. So having a great relationship is an important key to success. 

FINDING Something to Sell:
There are Tons of places online that allow you to sell their goods for a commission of the sale price, Clickbank and Clicksure are a few of the biggest. Also you can choose to become an affiliate for an online company. This part of the equation is pretty simple considering that there are many things online to sell. Finding a product that people want to buy is going to take some time and research. I recommend using google keyword tool to find out what offers have a high search ranking and a low to medium competition.

If you have a great offer but everyone and their mom is out there selling it, it will become harder to make sales. But if you have a really good product or offer and just a few people are out there selling it, you stand a better chance to make money.
The Next part is trying to find someone to sell it to. This is The Tough Part.

Finding the Right Customer:
Again this is where good research comes into play. You must know who your customer is... Are they a man woman or both? Do they have a certain trait about them and so on.. What are they trying to learn or figure out?


TRAFFIC:
Where should you be getting traffic from? I have had some success with doing PPV Traffic, which stands for Pay Per View. PPV is a pop up ad that allows you to place wherever you want. These ads cannot be blocked by pop-up blockers because they are registered different that a normal pop-up. The best part about PPV traffic is how cheap it is. You can get views for as low as a half of one cent! Direct PPV is a good site to check out along with 7 search

YOU should ALWAYS be sending your traffic to a squeeze page, to collect the prospects information such as name and E-mail. This way if they like your offer but don't buy immediately you have a chance to follow up with them through an email. After the Prospect has entered in their Email you send them directly to your Sales letter. Your sales letter should include key bullet points on what they will receive upon purchase, it must include some real live testimonials either video or letters telling people how great the product is and what their results are after using your product. 

Another Great traffic source I use are called banner adsPlenty of Fish is one I have used in the past.Banner ads are placed at the top or side of other people's webpages. This allows your product to be viewed from many different sources and gives it exposure across the internet.
